The Payroll Manager is responsible for supervising and managing the activities of the payroll department, ensuring accurate and timely processing of compensation. This role involves optimizing processes and systems, promoting a culture of continuous improvement, complying with current regulations, and coaching the payroll team.
Responsibilities
- Oversee day-to-day payroll operations and ensure timeliness.
- Ensure compliance with federal and provincial regulations as well as internal policies.
- Manage pay discrepancies and escalations, and ensure that issues are resolved.
- Conduct regular audits of processes and facilitate internal and external audits.
- Coordinate international payroll updates with external partners.
- Review and approve payroll data prior to final submission.
- Oversee year-end processing, including the production of tax slips and annual returns.
- Manage group insurance and pension plans (enrolment, renewals, rate changes, etc.).
- Integrate new acquired entities into payroll systems and processes.
- Plan and distribute team tasks to ensure effective management of operations.
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Establish and maintain trusting relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Implement continuous improvements to optimize process efficiency and accuracy.
- Foster a work environment focused on performance and skills development.
- Contribute to the implementation of strategic projects in collaboration with HR teams.
Skills and qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, human resources or related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of payroll management experience.
- Proficiency in payroll software and systems.
- Excellent understanding of payroll and compliance regulations.
- Organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Leadership and ability to mobilize a team.
- Analytical mind, rigor and autonomy.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including Excel.
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation (asset).
- Experience with UKG and Kronos (asset)
