Director of Health, Safety and Environment
Description
The Director of Health, Safety and Environment oversees and coordinates all safety, health and environmental programs, processes and activities to maintain a compliant and safe work environment. This role aims for excellence in safety, health and environment at the site to achieve the best safety and sustainability outcomes. The HSE Manager will develop the local strategy to ensure legal compliance and ensure compliance with BC standards. This role will ensure the implementation of programs to reduce safety incidents and harmful environmental impact. The HSE Manager directs and manages HSE incidents at the site. This role provides advice and support on relevant HSE issues. The HSE Manager is a member of the plant’s management team.
Main functions of the position:
- Design, maintain and lead the implementation of local safety and environmental management systems.
- Leads HSE incident management and ensures the management of CAPAs (corrective and preventive actions) related to documented risks or incident follow-up.
- Conducts HSE meetings, audits, and inspections to ensure compliance, evaluate performance, identify corrective actions, and implement follow-up assessments.
- Provides site employees, contractors, and visitors with health and safety guidelines and confirms that the project site complies with Barry Callebaut, industry, local, provincial, or national guidelines and regulations.
- Collaborates with management to develop an emergency action plan and serves as the primary contact for on-site HSE incident notification, investigation, and case management.
- Integration of occupational health and safety considerations into business decision-making and risk management.
- Advice on engineering and maintenance practices to improve safe work systems.
- Foster a positive HSE culture in particular by integrating the 10 LSPs (leadership safety principles), the 1-2-5 principle, Gemba safety discussions and trainings, and by putting safety at the forefront demonstrated by consistent managerial behaviors.
- Ensure compliance is regularly audited and performance is evaluated, and use the results to drive further improvements.
- Responsible for the monitoring and measurement of SSE variables – Scorecard SSE
Qualifications
- University education in HR, OHS or engineering or equivalent industrial experience.
- Qualifications required by local regulatory authorities: to be specified depending on location.
- Project management skills.
- Internal auditor or ISO auditor qualification (an asset)
- Experience with Lean/TPM tools and ways of working a plus.
- Good command of English
- Understand the requirements of relevant standards such as ISO 14001; ISO 45001 or OSHSAS 18001.

- 5 to 10 years of experience in a factory role: safety, health or environment, operations, continuous improvement, process improvement or quality.
- Experience with HSE management systems and risk management.
- Experience in managing change in a team.
